Cabo De Rama Fort , South Goa

Cabo de Rama fort, South Goa, is a medieval fort on the coast of Canacona in Goa that Shivaji, a great king of Marathas 1679, built. Cabo De Rama fort is also called “Cape De Rama”, “Cape Rama”, or “Cabo De Rama”.

Geography of Cabo de Rama fort:-

Cabo de Rama fort is located in the Canacona region of South Goa on the coast of the Arabian sea. It is in the middle of the two famous South Goa beaches, Cavelossim beach and Agonda beach. There is also a beach that is 500 m long just below the Cabo de Rama Fort.

It is a magnificent location where you get a great field of vision of South Goa, the sea, and the sunset. It is made up of laterite rock. The Fort is almost about 18000 square meters. It also gives a superb view of the Ocean and guards the entry of the Sal River.

History of Cabo de Rama fort:

Cabo De Rama Fort, Goa

Its name was constructed in the name of the Hindu god Lord Rama. As per the mythological stories of Ramayana, the lord Rama, Lakshman, and Sita had remained there for 14 years of their exile from Ayodhya, which is why it is named Cabo de Rama Fort. It is a fort that gives you peace and solitude. So, we can say that the Fort is very old-fashioned. It is also the ancient and biggest Fort in Western India.

In 1763, the Portuguese attacked and conquered the Fort. After that, they added the word Cabo to this Fort, named only after lord Rama. The word ‘Cabo’ means ‘cape’ in Portuguese.

After 1765, The Portuguese returned to Europe, and the Fort was ruined by the British and used as a military bastion. Then in 1813, the Britishers converted it into a prison, which remained a prison until 1955.

India converted Goa into Union Territory And abandoned the prison, and made it a tourist place as a fort for Visitors. Now, it is considered a beautiful place with wonderful views, and people enjoy their holidays at this Cabo de Rama fort. But now, the Fort is almost in ruins, but the Church is maintained. It is also used for research by scientists and researchers of the government of India.

The beauty of the castle leaves many tourists speechless. It gives a mesmerizing view of the Arabian sea. The Church gave the essence of solitude, a prominent architecture of Christians. It is like the union of all religions in India.

 Latest Condition of Cabo de Rama fort:-

The Fort embodied the gatehouse, cannon guns, bastions, springs, water tank, watch tower and a small chapel. You can enjoy the historical things in the Fort. There is a bridge near the entrance, which was constructed 300 years ago. Some canons have been used only once.

On the left side of the Fort, there is a beautiful St Antonio Church where a feast is also commemorated once a year. It also contains a prison that was pre-owned by the government till 1955.

There were also water tanks that may be avail by kings at those times; one was for warm water, and one was for cold water. Below the Fort, there is a beautiful marvellous beach. A sea from the left side of the Fort gives you a wonderful view at night.

How to reach Cabo de Rama Fort, South Goa?

You can easily reach Cabo de Rama fort from any airport hub through public transport. The Cabo de Rama fort is 27 km away from Margao Railway Station, 56km from Vasco Da Gama Railway station and 60 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand. You can reach the Fort from any destination via Bus, Cab, Auto or rental bike.

The best time for visiting the Fort is between 9 am to 5 pm; It gives a stunning panorama of the Arabian sea from the western side. As Goa is in the tropical zone, the best time to visit Goa to explore the Fort and historical site is from October to February. It is the time when people from abroad visit Goa forts and enjoy the climate. It is the period of festivals where you can enjoy Christmas, Carnival, and New year, making the best memories of life.

  • This Fort, an architectural wonder, displays a lovely fusion of several cultures and customs. Remains in this area are influenced by Hindu, Portuguese, and British cultures.
  • The Fort has several bastions, a big water tank, a moat, a gatehouse, a well, two springs, and a strong defensive wall. Many of the bastions still have large cannons on them.
