A big debate has happened because of using “Bharat” instead of “India” in the government’s messages. This dispute started with posts by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Biswa.
The issue kicked off when Jairam Ramesh posted that invites for a G20 dinner now showed Droupadi Murmu as “The President of Bharat” instead of the usual “President of India.” This caused a lot of talk, with Ramesh accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of changing history and splitting the country.
Conversely, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Biswa took to social media to cheer for using “Republic of Bharat,” showing his pride in the nation’s heritage.
This controversy didn’t stop at just the invites. Even the G20 booklet, meant for foreign guests, carries the title “Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy.” It talks about India’s long history of democratic traditions.
While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stands by this change, leaders from the opposition, including Congress members, expressed their strong dislike. RJD’s Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha criticized the move, saying that it’s only been a little while since they named their alliance “INDIA,” and now the BJP is using the “Republic of Bharat” instead of “Republic of India.”

The buzz around this dispute also makes people wonder if they might change Article 1 of the Constitution during an upcoming special session of Parliament. This change would make the country’s official name “Bharat” instead of “India.”
If this change occurs, it could confuse websites using the IN domain. Currently, this domain shows that a website is Indian. We’ll have to see how this argument about words and politics unfolds in the days ahead.
