Indian Cuisine:
Indian Cuisine is one of the most varied cuisines in the world. It is distinguished by its sophisticated and subtle use of the numerous spices, vegetables, cereals, and fruits grown throughout India. The different demographics of the ethnically diverse Indian subcontinent are reflected in the variety of foods and cooking methods found in each region’s cuisine. India’s culture and religious beliefs have influenced the development of its food. A large number of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain communities practice vegetarianism.
Variety of Indian Cuisines
Though we find a variety of India Cuisines, like Kashmiri cuisine, Punjabi cuisine, Maratha Cuisine, Goan Cuisine, Rajasthani Cuisine, Karnataka cuisine, Tamil Cusine, and many others, geographically, these Indian cuisines are divided into 4 main parts – Northern cuisine, Southern cuisine, Eastern cuisine, and Western cuisine. Based on the climate, geographical differences, spices availability, and history, these cuisines offer different varieties of Indian food that are distinct in taste.
Indian cuisine is famous for its rich spices, aromatic herbs, and unique bread – all of which shine through in these dishes. The variety is also stunningly vast; there is countless authentic and novel take on this tried-and-true theme. From salads to curries to desserts, here are some of my all-time favorite Indian recipes.
Chana masala
Chana masala is a popular dish in Indian cuisine that comes from the northern part of the country. It’s made with chickpeas, tomatoes, and various spices and is often served with rice or naan bread. If you’re looking for a hearty and filling dish, chana masala is a great choice. Chickpeas are a good source of protein, and the spices give them a flavorful kick. It’s also relatively easy to make, so it’s perfect for weeknight meals.
Palak Paneer
This dish is a vegetarian favorite made with spinach and cottage cheese. The spinach is blanched and then pureed, and the cottage cheese is cubed and fried. The pureed spinach is added to the fried cottage cheese, and the whole dish is cooked in spiced tomato gravy. Palak paneer is usually served with rice or roti, and it’s a great way to get your greens in!
Fish curry
If you want to try a traditional Indian dish, you must try fish curry. This dish is popular all over the country, and it’s easy to see why. Fish curry is a fragrant and flavorful dish that’s perfect for a weekday meal. The best thing about fish curry is that it’s so versatile. You can use any type of fish you like, and the curry can be made as spicy or mild as you want. To make fish curry, you’ll need to fry some onions and garlic. Then, add in your chosen spices and cook until fragrant. Next, add in the fish and cook until it’s cooked through. Finally, add some coconut milk to create a rich and creamy sauce. Serve with rice or naan bread.
Butter chicken
Butter Chicken is one of the most popular Indian dishes inside and outside the country. It’s a creamy chicken curry usually served with rice or naan bread. The key ingredients in butter chicken are, you guessed it, butter and cream, which give it its rich and creamy texture. Other key ingredients include ginger, garlic, garam masala, chili powder, and cumin. The chicken is first marinated in a mixture of yogurt, lemon juice, and spices overnight. The chicken is cooked in a buttery gravy the next day until it’s fall-off-the-bone tender. If you’re looking for a rich and flavorful Indian dish, butter chicken is a great choice.
Biryani
Biryani is a classic rice dish that is popular all over India. It is made with basmati rice and your choice of meat or vegetables. The dish is cooked in gravy made with tomatoes, onions, and spices. This layered Indian dish, Biryani, is usually served with raita, a yogurt-based sauce, and a dollop of ghee (clarified butter). Also, eating salad (onions, cucumber, and tomato) with Biryani is the authentic style of eating this famous Indian food, Biryani.
Dosa or Dose
Dosa is a paper-thin pancake made from fermented rice and black lentil batter. It is usually served with chutney and sambar (a vegetable stew) on the side. Dosa is a popular dish in South India, but it can be found all over the country. The batter is usually prepared a day in advance and allowed to ferment overnight. This gives the dosa its signature sour taste. Once the batter is fermented, it is poured onto a hot griddle and spread out into a thin circle. The dosa is then cooked until crispy and golden brown. Dosa is typically served for breakfast or as a snack but can also be enjoyed for lunch or dinner.
Gulab Jamun
Last but not least, we have gulab jamun! Famous Indian dessert. These are milk-solid balls that are soaked in sugar syrup and are delicious. Gulab jamun is probably one of the most popular Indian desserts for a good reason. What’s not to love about gulab jamun? They’re sweet; they’re soft; they melt in your mouth… I could go on and on. If you haven’t tried gulab jamun before, you need to. Trust me; you won’t regret it.
On a concluding note, India is a vast and varied country with a rich culinary tradition. Many popular dishes from across the country are worth trying. If you’re interested in trying some of India’s traditional cuisine, there are many great options. Talk to your local Indian restaurant about their menu items and see what they recommend.
